Those familiar with the Sanchez + Coleman Studio in Miami know to expect the unexpected. The atelier, which presents the fashion of Angel Sanchez alongside the interior design of Christopher Coleman, thrives on aesthetic surprises.
True to form, starting in Art Week through the month of December, the studio is presenting Hyper Black and White, an exhibition featuring the work of photographer and creative director Cris Molina, a man who’s clearly interested in making a statement.
“I’m drawn to the idea of being a provocateur,” says Molina. “My [subjects] rarely make eye contact with the camera, and I’m not a big fan of happy faces.”
To that end, Molina’s highly stylized photographs denote seduction and glamour—and they do so on a grand scale. Measuring 6 by 7 feet, the limited edition works (priced from $20,000) are printed on silver metal sheets, signed and numbered (with only five copies made for each image).
Molina’s collaboration with Sanchez and Coleman came about after a meeting with Daniella Lainville, a partner at S+C. “I showed her pieces from my collection on my iPad and she instantly saw a synergy between the style of their studio and my work,” says Molina. “I was drawn by how the S+C space is laid out and the balance between the aesthetics, the clean lines and the clothes.”
Molina even created two new works for the exhibition, including one featuring model Alicia Carriles wearing an Angel Sanchez gown.
“My goal is to engage the audience,” says Molina. “I want them to imagine what’s happening or what’s to come based on the poses, outfits and body language.”
